Pizza Boxes go circular at Unilodge's University Hall!

Pizza Boxes go circular Unilodge's University Hall - a custom designed bin station diverts them from landfill to compost for Canterbury Farms!

Following a waste audit in early 2021, we identified the biggest waste stream for University Hall was pizza boxes - from a popular takeaway treat for the students AND a product that has a circular solution in Christchurch.

Due to tight space in the kitchenettes, prior to our audit the only bin was a general waste bin. Due to the quantity and size of pizza boxes, these bins were often over-flowing and difficult for the cleaning staff to remove.

Pizza Boxes in Christchurch can be composted via an Organics collection that goes to Living Earth Composting Facility so we wanted to ensure this product could be collected and sent for composting.

We designed a custom bracket to be fixed next to their newly implemented Longopac continuous bagging system (to support their commingled recycling solution and to prevent further over-flows).The brackets hold up to 10 boxes.

To assist the cleaning staff in getting boxes removed from the kitchenettes, we implemented a bring back initiative where students could get a free pizza if they brought back 10 boxes!

The revised waste systems helped Unilodge divert up to 49% of their waste from landfill with up to 38% being Organics and Pizza Boxs!
